The Sungai Liang recreational beach park, which was in a state of ruin a few months ago, has been given a total makeover thanks to the efforts of Brunei Methanol Company (BMC), and is set to become a popular recreational spot.
According to a BMC representative, the bridges connecting the recreational park to the beach area were on the verge of collapse, therefore works such as placement of handrails and reinforcement of concrete were carried out in the interest of public safety.
In addition, BMC has made efforts to beautify the park by erecting fences around the recreational area and has also cleared up the bushes to let visitors enjoy the view of the sea.
To further encourage healthy activities among Mukim Liang villagers, the damaged futsal court has also been repaired and the floor has been resurfaced and painted.
Furthermore, an allocated space within the recreational area has been converted into a parking lot for the convenience of visitors and the concrete shelter for stall operators in the Mukim has also been repaired and relocated to provide adequate space for activities.
BMC staff involved in the community project had also cleaned the beach area, but were disappointed to find that it was continuously being polluted by transported logs and rubbish among others.
“It was a breathtaking view when we drove alongside the beach from Jalan Pantai Sungai Liang to Jalan Telisai. But sadly, no efforts have been made to maintain the beach area,” the BMC representative said.
Therefore, to let visitors enjoy the scenic beach, BMC, Sungai Liang Authority and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from Japan, who funded the community project, are also planning to build additional recreational huts equipped with chairs and tables for picnic-goers and visitors. Trash bins have also been provided at strategic areas in a bid to promote cleanliness.
Yesterday morning, a ceremony took place to mark the handover of the recreational park from BMC to the Belait District Office at the site.
The guest of honour was the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Awg Hj Muhammad Lufti bin Hj Abdullah.
BMC Deputy Executive Mohd Reduan bin Hj Yusof said the project executed by BMC took two months to complete at an estimated cost of about B$160,000.
At the ceremony, a BMC representative handed over the project certificate to the guest of honour, who then presented it to Sungai Liang village head Awg Hj Wahab bin Abdullah.
The event followed with the presentation of certificates to contributors and sponsors by the Belait District Officer Hj Jamain bin Momin.
It ended with the launch of the official signboard of the recreational park and also a noticeboard warning against littering in Brunei.
