Fifteen Customs Officers and Examiners of the Royal Customs and Excise Department were produced before the court to face charges of receiving bribes ranging from $3 to $10 for forbearing to take action against fuel smugglers.
No pleas were taken from the defendants as the court gave them time to seek legal advice before proceeding with the case and they were each released on court bail of $4,000 or one local surety.
Each of the defendants face charges under Section 6 (a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22).
They are: Zulrani bin Hj Othman, Nur Emma binti Shahrul Mazlan, Rozai bin Haji Mahmod, Siti Rahayu binti Hidup, Dk Dayana binti Pg Rosli, Rosli bin Hj Duraman, Dk Sufina binti Pg Hj Sulaiman.
The others are Saiful Hadlin bin Awang Nordin, Rudi Omera bin Bakar, Mohd Syazani bin Hj Hambali, Nurlatifah binti Hj Omar, Johari bin Hj Mohamad, Haslinda binti Hj Sabtu, Haji Mohd Embrey bin Haji Mahmud and Muhd Azri bin Muhd Hadi are in further pursuance of the previous six Customs officers who were produced in court earlier for graft as well.
All of yesterday’s defendants are alleged to have received bribes from November 2008 until February 2009 whilst being deployed at the Sungai Tujoh Customs Control Post in Kuala Belait.
They will be brought again to court on June 1, 2010 for further mention of the case.
Meanwhile, the other six Customs officers will be brought again to court May 24 for further mention of the case.
