AirAsia-Sepang International Circuit rider confident of good outing in Jerez
SEPANG, April 28, 2010- Team AirAsia-Sepang International Circuit rider Mohd. Zulfahmi Khairuddin is all set to improve on his performance in Qatar for the Spanish MotoGP this weekend.
“I have been training hard for the past two weeks to improve my fitness level so that I can perform better in the upcoming race this weekend. The team have been working hard to get the best setting for the motorbikes. My target is to finish the race and improve on the time I had set in Qatar. I am confident of a good outing in Jerez,” said the 18-year old rider, who crossed the 2010 Qatar MotoGP finish line in 39:47.642, emerging 21st out of 26.
Fahmi first gained recognition in the motoring world by making it to the top 20 of the Shell Advance Malaysian MotoGP 2009 in the 125cc category, racing as a wildcard rider for the AirAsia Malaysia 125cc MotoGP Team.
His entrance in the MotoGP World Championships marks him as the first ever Malaysian to compete on the world stage in the 125GP class.
“I underwent the IRTA test in Jerez last month, so I am somewhat familiar with the track. I hope to perform better in the Spanish MotoGP than how I had performed in the test,” said Fahmi.
AirAsia Group CEO Dato’ Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes said, “We are confident for Fahmi to achieve good result at the race weekend in Jerez. He is a very talented and competitive rider, and the high spirits that he displayed during the two weeks of training reflects his utmost desire to win. This is indeed a very positive gain for the team. Fahmi is living proof that Asean motorsport talents have the technical competency and the mindset to compete to take on the best in the world! We wish him all the best for the race.”
AirAsia partners Sepang International Circuit in forming Team AirAsia-Sepang International Circuit, to showcase Asean talents on the world stage. The team believes Asean has a lot of untapped motorsport talents, but limited opportunities are available to help them shine. This joint effort hopes to provide the platform for these talents to unleash their potential.
AirAsia is also the title sponsor of the 2010 AirAsia British Grand Prix at Silverstone, bringing back MotoGP to the circuit after 24 years away. AirAsia’s sponsorship is set to deliver added verve to the sport by lending its successful, innovative and passionate traits. Moreover, as a fast-rising global brand, the airline’s association with MotoGP is expected to stir further interest in the sport not just among motor sport fans but the wider community throughout Asia.
