The Knights rugby team did the double in the Brunei Rugby League yesterday by defeating archrival KB Python 73-21 to lift the Darussalam Cup after being crowned the champion of the Dr Kamaruddin Cup two weeks ago,
Another historic feat for the Knight is that they also finished with a perfect season this year.
Knight’s Kerry had a high game by scoring 14 points. On the other side, Coach Petrus of KB Python was high flying by scoring three conversion kicks to grab six points for his team.
In the first half, the Knights were already dominating, thanks to their speedy forward and defensive play. By the end of the first half, the Knights already led by 37-7.
In the second half, KB Python injected some life into the game when they managed to break through the stubborn defensive line of the Knights to score another two tries and two conversion kicks. However, the Knights continued to maintain their composure to end the game with a big lead of 73-21.
Knights coach Johannes Hickey, nicknamed Hansie, said after the match ” it’s a historic moment for us. We grabbed both championships and even more, we did it with an undefeated record.”
Coach Hansie credited the success of the team to the founder, Ben Bourne. He said” gratitude has to be given to Ben Bourne. He was the founding coach of the club. He put up the platform for the success.”
On the final against the KB Python, he said “I think we just maintained our strategy and our team was more organised through the match to allow us to score”
“They did gave us a strong challenge and I feel that they are the hardest team to play against this season,” he added.
Meanwhile, coach Petrus Tun of KB Python is happy with his team’s fighting spirit in the final.
He said “it was a good game. Knights are a very strong team and I am happy that my boys played quite good today. We managed to break their line in the second half and scored a few tries but at the end there has to be a winner and a loser.”
He said the team will continue to train and will participate in the PSK in June.
The Bandar Black took third place. The fair play award went to UBD Sharks
Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abdul Wahab, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, presented the prizes to the winners.
