In case of fire, do not panic: Fire and Rescue Department

The health promotion committee of Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School in Kampong Salambigar recently held a fire safety and prevention talk facilitated by officers of the Fire and Rescue Department.
A total of 440 students from Years Seven and Eight attended the briefing that was led by Awang Abdul Halim bin Haji Bujang. Additional talks on safety related topics were also covered by Dayang Rozita binti Hj Mohd Khamis.

The officer explained that the purpose of the talk was to expose students, teachers and staff of the school to the duties and responsibilities of the Fire and Rescue Department as well as diseminating information such as the correct method of utilising fire extinguishers and basic knowledge regarding what actions should be taken to prevent a fire from spreading while awaiting the arrival of a fire brigade.

The officials stressed that if a fire occurs during school hours, students should not panic. It is very important that the school community reamains calm in order to think clearly during such an emergency. Activating a fire alarm and making emergency phone calls to the relevant authourities are amongst the first things that should be done.

Students should vacate the school premises in a calm and orderly fashion and that this course of action should be carried out immidiately. The fire safety talk also saw officers telling the students the different categories of fire and the equipment used as well as tactics to follow to help prevent a fire outbreak from occuring.

A practical demonstration took place at the school following the talk. Some students were given the chance to use different types of fire extinguishers to put out controlled fires initiated by the visiting officers.
