Brunei keglers ready to strike

Sahama May 14th, 2010 .

Brunei national keglers are ready to strike for medals at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Malacca after failing to win any medals in the past.
Coach Mike Griffith said that his players are capable of bringing back medals from this meet after showing impressive results during friendlies and training.

“During the last meet in Terengganu, we were represented by two players but failed to capture any medals. This edition, Brunei will be sending four athletes who are confident to execute the game plan and win medals after showing great achievement so far,” said the Australian coach who has been guiding the national side for nearly five years.

Brunei are represented by Fatin Nur Ashikin Abu Bakar and sibling’s trio Dayangku Nadia Nabillah Pg Abu Samah, Ak Khairul Rijal Pg Abu Samah and Ak Izzul Raihan Pg Abu Samah.

They will compete in Single’s category, one Double’s event in Boy’s and Girl’s category and two Mixed Double’s event.

When asked about preparation, coach Mike said they recently competed in the Invitational Single’s Classic in Kota Kinabalu and two of his bowlers have proven that they are ready to vie for podium finish.

“Among 15 Bruneians who played in the invitational games, Khairul Rijal finished the highest and Fatin managed to break three national records, accumulating the highest shot,” Mike said during an interview at the Utama Bowl yesterday.

“After coming back from the invitational games, we have undergone training four times a week to prepare tactically, mentally and fitness level for Sukma,” the coach added.

Brunei’s keglers’ best achievement was in 2006 Sukma in Kedah winning a silver medal.

Fatin, who will be participating in her second Sukma after Kedah, is aiming to strike gold in this meet.

“I am a bit disappointed because I did not win anything in Kedah. I was nervous. However, I am ready now and I want to win gold,” said Fatin who has been trained by Mike for several years.
