DEATH IN CUSTODY TRIAL: Police log book under scrutiny

IlhamRizal May 19th, 2010 .

The police log book in relation to the ‘Death in Custody’ trial was copied and handed over to another policeman at the Sengkurong Police Station.
Police Constable Azlan Othman did not know whether the police log book was copied and given to a PC Faisal. PC Azlan also denied that the log book was given to PC Faisal but handed it back over to a PC Sahari. PC Azlan continued his testimony in the ongoing High Court trial yesterday.

The witness also informed the court that the deceased Abdul Rahim Abdullah @ Tan Tong Hock, also known as Ah Hock, was not wearing a shirt when he came in for duty on January 25, 2009.

At about 6.10, PC Azlan checked up on Ah Hock, where he stated in his log book Ah Hock was sound asleep and from 6 to 9.30, he made three checks on Ah Hock and saw the detainee on his side and facing the wall.

PC Azlan maintained his answer that Ah Hock was in a good condition as stated in his police diary. He also told the court that the detainee was not wearing a detainee’s uniform shirt but only the pants as the shirt was unavailable at that time.

PC Azlan denied when alleged by the defence counsel Yusuf Halim that as he handed over his duty shift to a PC Adanan, he and PC Adanan would beat up the detainee.

In contention to Deputy Public Prosecutor Hj Nabil, PC Azlan replied that no one at the Sengkurong Police Station would beat up a detainee if he accidentally relieved himselves while in the lock-up and also no one at the station would hose down a detainee.

PC Faisal was also called to the witness stand yesterday where he confirmed that Ah Hock was also in a healthy condition when he was brought out of the lock-up and walked without any aid.

But only after coming back from the CID room at the Sengkurong Police Station did he see Ah Hock weak and he helped him walk to the lock-up. DC Yusuf Halim said to the witness that he did not examine Ah Hock thoroughly up to the extent that he did not realise that two of Ah Hock’s fingers were severed and there was pus.

The trial continues today. IlhamRizal and Salawati Hj Yahya
