The Brunei Darussalam tug-of-war team left for Malacca yesterday to compete in the two-day 6th One Malaysia Tug-of-War competition at the Ayer Keroh Historical Square starting today.
Heading the team was the president of Brunei Darussalam Tug-of-War Federation (BDTWA), Pg Hj Jadid Pg Hj Omarali who is also the newly appointed vice-president of the Asian Tug-of-War Federation (ATWF).
Brunei, represented by 20 athletes comprising 13 from the Ministry of Development and seven from the BDTWA, will be pulling the rope in the Men’s Open category, promising RM2,888.88 prize money for the champion including live goats and gifts.
Brunei Darussalam Tug-of-War team manager, Haji Sallih Haji Osman said they were aiming for a top three finish although knowing that they will be playing against the strongest Malaysian team, Royal Malaysian Police team (PDRM).
“We have undergone a two-week training since returning from the 8th Asian Tug-of-War championship at Dangjin County in South Korea. I hope we can play well especially against the PDRM side who finished third in South Korea last month,” said Hj Sallih at the Brunei International Airport yesterday.
He said Brunei Darussalam and Singapore were the only countries invited to play in this competition. Two other categories – Indoor and Women’s Open category – will also be contested.
In the last edition in South Korea, Brunei Darussalam represented by the Ministry of Development, finished seventh out of 14 countries taking part.
Meanwhile in 2006, Brunei made it to the semifinals in the Asian Tug-of-War Championship, the first time the Sultanate had made an appearance at the event and in 2008 in Macau, Brunei were ousted at the quarterfinal stage.
