His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday granted an audience to William Todd, the outgoing Ambassador of the United States of America to Brunei Darussalam at the Istana Nurul Iman.

Also present at the audience was John McIntyre, the Deputy Chief of Mission who will serve as Charge d’ Affaires until a new US Ambassador is appointed.

Mr William Todd has been the Ambassador of the United States of America to Brunei Darussalam since July 14, 2008.

Mr Todd noted in his audience with His Majesty, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, that the relations between the United States of America and Brunei Darussalam had greatly strengthened during his tenure in Brunei.

Ambassador Todd thanked His Majesty for his outstanding cooperation and support in a number of key areas: Military-to-military cooperation, enhancing educational ties, and the important role Brunei plays in regional and international organisations such as Asean.

The visits of many key US dignitaries including US Assistant Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell and US Senator Bill Nelson were also highlighted.

The opening of the new US Embassy later this year was discussed as a sign of America’s long-term commitment to Brunei Darussalam.

Ambassador Todd said that while he looks forward to his next assignment in Kabul, Afghanistan, he considers Brunei the highlight of his professional career. He also noted that he and his children believe Brunei is their second home and look forward to returning for many visits to Brunei in the future.

Ambassador Todd will assume the duties of Coordinating Director for Development, Foreign Assistance, and Economic Affairs at the US Mission in Afghanistan. His position is one of the Ambassadorial coordinator positions at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.
