A charity event held Saturday, which was attended by students from various schools across the Belait District, saw eight members of the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF) sharing their recent trekking experience to Mount Everest.
The BCF members partook in a 120-kilometre-trek as part of a charity initiative aimed at raising $50,000 for the National Welfare Fund with support from the Community Development Department (JAPEM). The trek took place between April 22 and May 9. The entire donation will be channeled towards the construction of new homes for Brunei’s underprivileged families
Apart from the trekking expedition, BCF members also succeeded in ascending Mount Kalapatar and organised a chess match at its base camp.
At the charity event attended by students from various schools in the Belait District, eight members of the BCF trekking team shared the experiences of their journey to and from the Everest base camp.
President of the BCF, Haji Zainal Abidin bin Haji Mohd Ali, in his welcoming remarks said it was monumental and that it would be shared with schools across the country.
The event was also held to laud the generous donors who contributed to a very worthy cause. To support the cause, the Seri Kandi Group of Companies contributed $3,500, while the Adinin Group of Companies donated $5,000. The guest of honour at the event was Pehin Dato Paduka Awg Haji Dani bin Haji Ibrahim.
The charity is still open to the general public and those wishing to make donations can do it online at www.trekkingamal.com.bn. Cheques can also be made out to ‘BCF Trekking Amal’ at all HSBC banks across the country.
Meanwhile in collaboration with the Everest Trekking Amal team, OGDC will be conducting a series of motivational talks to inspire students, develop leadership qualities as well as take into account the importance of environmental awareness. The exhibition on the Everest Trekking Amal is scheduled to be held at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre for three months.
