Over 50 individuals consisting of Total E&P Borneo BV (TEPB) staff, representatives from the Department of Fisheries, Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, the Beach Bunch and Daikyo Environmental Recycling Sdn Bhd recently participated in the Total Beach Clean-Up programme.

TEPB held the event at Jerudong Beach to celebrate World Environment Day 2010. It was officiated by Total E&P Borneo BV General Manager cum guest of honour Yves Grosjean.

The event was organised based on this year’s theme – ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future,’ which focuses on the importance of biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

A recycling drive and awareness presentations on deep marine biology, ocean pollution, environmental preservation and ways in which each individual can make a big difference by being an agent of change were also part of the event, held prior to the cleanup.

As the company emphasises on environmental protection as top priority and as an active player in developing future solutions (particularly in safety, health, industrial hygiene, the environment, quality, security and community initiatives), it fulfills TEPB’s environmental initiative all of which are interconnected realms.

Sunlit Advertising Sdn Bhd supplied 20 units of re-useable rubbish bags (created from used PVC banners) which were donated to Beach Bunch.

Daikyo Environmental Recycling Sdn Bhd provided recycling bins, allowing general, plastic and aluminium waste to be discarded into their respective bins.

The accumulated waste was weighed at the end of the day, with a total of 321 kg collected. More specifically, the breakdown is – 281 kg of general waste; 39.5 kg of plastic bottles; and 0.5 kg of aluminium cans.

Total has created, adopted or adapted guidance that shapes the actions of its frontline employees, where they constantly strive to learn more about the air, water, soil and biodiversity in order to protect them effectively. At the same time, they work hand-in-hand with the scientific and research community.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ flagship environment event and is celebrated globally each year on June 5 in over 100 countries. Its purpose is to focus worldwide attention and stimulate awareness on the importance of the environment, to enhance political attention and action, and to address the ever-growing issue on the importance of environmental conservation.

The event sought to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnerships which will ensure that all nations and people enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
