Noradzlianayati bte Abdul Razak or Liana officially entered into the Sepang Circuit’s record book after becoming the fastest female Bruneian driver by clocking a time of 2:51.510.
“We proved the boys wrong and it was payback time!” said an enthusiastic Liana referring to the male drivers during the race and added that some of them even had to retire before completing the race.
The all-girls Red Bull Rookies Racing team have a history of being ‘bullied’ by other racers.
“These people on the track are very experienced. It was really a good feeling to show the other drivers (men) that we can be in the same league,” said Liana.
The Red Bull Rookies Racing team was given much attention by the media. Mellin Jaini or Mel made her debut on the fifth of 11 pit stops.
Mel expressed her delight in successfully achieving the task given to them by the team owner – to finish the race.
“It’s great we finally got to do it and be recognised as an all-girls team can finish the race too.
“We set out to do what we wanted to do and we brought the good news back home,” she said.
The team, bearing number 18, made up of Brunei’s Liana and Mel, both 26, together with Carmen and Puteri of Malaysia. They finished 11th in Class One (1900 and 1601cc) and 28th overall (combination of Class One and Two). A total of 54 cars were on the grid.
Both Liana and Mel’s family members and friends came to support them and celebrate the special occasion.
Meanwhile, Mr Wong Chin Toon of GreenCity Concept Sdn Bhd said, “We are planning another project next year and it is highly possible that we will have another team.”
According to a press statement, this is the third consecutive all-female team that has excelled in the event. Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) was on hand to shoot the race live for the production of the reality TV show to be aired on RTB at a later date. The Brunei Red Bull Rookies team was sponsored by Kingston Beverage and Creamery Sdn Bhd, the local distributor for Red Bull drinks in Brunei.
