The Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi will arrive in Brunei Darussalam today from the Lion City, Singapore.
A welcoming reception will be hosted by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, on the arrival of the baton on its 64th destination, later today.
A Queen’s Baton Relay will be held tomorrow (June 9).
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah will be the first baton bearer for Brunei Darussalam.
The route will start from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Shopping Complex and head towards the jetty of Yayasan.
Lance Corporal Shamsul Rizal Abdul Rahman will ferry the baton to Kampong Ayer Gallery and hand it over to Awg Abdul Aziz Hj Hassan who will take the baton on a traditional boat ride around the Water Village.
At the next checkpoint, Sungai Lampai Jetty, Arifin Hj Zainal, a national kayaker, will be on hand to pass the baton to the next bearers – the eight high commissioners of Commonwealth countries – Britain and India (Bumbungan 12), Malaysia, Canada, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Singapore and Australia (Brunei Arts and Handicrafts Training Centre).
For Britain, the baton bearer will be Mr Rob Fenn, British Deputy High Commissioner, for India Mr Riewad V Warjri, the High Commissioner of India, for Canada Wendell Joseph Sanford/Dk Nurul Salwani Pg Hj Sabtu, while Bangladesh, Pakistan and Singapore will be represented by their Deputy High Commissioners. Malaysia and Australia are yet to confirm their baton bearers.
At the Clock Tower, Christian Nicholas (aquatic) will carry the baton to the Royal Regalia Museum and pass it to Mazlan Hj Yahya (petanque) who will jog to the Bandar Seri Begawan Fire Station.
Sefli Ahar (athletics) who is assigned to hold the baton from the fire station will move to the next checkpoint, Jalan Sekolah, to pass it to the next bearer, Md Fathullah Md Taib (taekwondo). He will pass the baton to Fida’y Hj Sanif (karate) at Mabohai Supa Save before Hj Khairul Bahrin Hj Awang Duraman (Pencak Silat) takes the baton at the 12th checkpoint, the State Legislative Council.
The Pencak Silat athlete will pass the baton to Md Nur Fadzillah Metussin, another Pencak Silat athlete, (Schools Sports Council) at the Commonwealth Drive junction and head to the International Convention Centre (ICC) where the next bearer will be Awg Alihan Muda, a disabled athlete.
He will hand the baton to former national athlete to the Commonwealth Games, Abd Rahman Hj Omar (lawn bowler) at the Budiman Walk (last bearer).
Abd Rahman will be accompanied by groups of students from Pulaie Primary School (24), Anggerek Desa Primary School (20), Delima Primary School (20), Berakas Secondary School (50), Science College (20), STPRI (20), Jerudong International School (40), ISB (53) and Schools Sports Council (162). He will hand the baton to HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium concourse.
The President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council will pass the baton to a representative of Malaysia, the host of the next Queen’s Baton Relay.
A Queen’s Baton Exhibition will be held on Thursday (June 10) at The Mall in Gadong from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm.
Brunei Darussalam first participated in 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff, Wales. It has participated regularly in all the Games since 1990 Commonwealth Games held in Auckland, New Zealand.
