In view of technological advances, we need to be more creative and vigilant in reviewing our.policies and regulations.
This observation was made by Brunei’s Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Utama Awg Hj Mohd Taha, during the opening of the Plenary Session of the 42nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Telecommunications and Information Working Group yesterday.
“We need to respond to changes that have taken place around us more effectively and swiftly,” he said, adding that the theme for this year’s APEC in Japan – Change & Action – “accurately captures the course of action that we all need to take”.
Noting that the theme for the upcoming 8th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Telecommunications and Information Industry was `ICT As An Engine For New Socio-Economic Growth’, Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin told delegates attending yesterday’s Plenary Session that their input would help chart the direction and strategies of ICT in their respective economies.
The ICT industry in particular is very much supportive of APEC 2010 priority of the New Growth Strategy where issues such as environmental and energy sustainability are being highlighted, in addition to the importance of innovation in a knowledge-based economy and greater readiness and inclusiveness in our society, he added.
The permanent secretary noted that these key issues have been “addressed and deliberated” through the respective Steering Groups of APECTEL.
“I have also observed over the past few days that several initiatives and projects have been implemented, which addressed the key issues of integration, industry development and prosperity, human capacity building and security and environmental sustainability,” he added.
The meeting, which will run until August 7, is being hosted by Brunei’s Ministry of Communications and the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI).
Some 150 international delegates from 20 other APEC economies and about 100 local delegates are attending the talk.
