JAKARTA, Aug 5 (NNN-Bernama) — More than 2,000 people have lived in makeshift tents and other facilities as floods hit Gorontalo in eastern parts of Indonesia, National Disaster Management Agency reported here Thursday.
Consecutive days of heavy rains have been blamed for the disaster which has submerged over 3,000 houses, China’s Xinhua news agency quoted spokesman of the agency Priyadi Kardono as saying at the disaster management agency office here.
“Gorontalo has been commonly hit by the floods,” he said.
Rescuers worked hard to evacuate residents to escape from the disaster as the waters submerged their houses at one-and-half-metre high, the spokesman said.
The waters also inundated hundreds of hectares of paddy fields, he said.
Indonesia has been frequently hit by floods and landslides during wet season which take places annually from April to December. Lacking of forest-covered areas has been blamed for the disasters.
